Discover El Granaino Bar Mesón

If you're ever in Frigiliana, Málaga, a charming town in southern Spain known for its narrow, winding streets and picturesque views, make sure to stop by El Granaino Bar Mesón. Located at Callejón del Agua, C. Real, this restaurant offers an authentic taste of Andalusian cuisine, paired with a relaxed atmosphere that makes it the perfect spot for locals and tourists alike.

The first thing that strikes you about El Granaino Bar Mesón is its welcoming ambiance. It's a quaint, family-run establishment that feels like home the moment you step inside. The rustic decor, featuring traditional Spanish tiles and warm lighting, gives off an inviting vibe, drawing you in from the cobblestone street outside. The space is small but cozy, and you can always count on a friendly greeting from the staff.

The menu at El Granaino Bar Mesón reflects the rich culinary traditions of Andalusia. Known for its fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, the restaurant serves a variety of tapas and larger plates. A must-try is their grilled fish, typically caught fresh from the Mediterranean, and served with a simple yet flavorful seasoning that allows the natural taste of the fish to shine through. The "pescaito frito" (fried fish) is another crowd favorite-crispy, golden, and perfectly seasoned.

For those looking to explore more traditional Spanish dishes, the restaurant's "rabo de toro" (oxtail stew) is a standout. This dish is slow-cooked to perfection, allowing the tender meat to fall off the bone, making each bite a melt-in-your-mouth experience. Paired with a glass of robust local wine, it’s a taste of Spain at its finest. If you're in the mood for something lighter, the selection of fresh salads and vegetable-based tapas will not disappoint.

One thing that sets El Granaino Bar Mesón apart is its commitment to quality. The owners take great pride in sourcing the freshest ingredients, often purchasing produce from local markets in Frigiliana, ensuring that each dish is not only delicious but also sustainable. The kitchen is open, allowing you to see the chefs in action as they prepare each meal with care and attention to detail.

As for the drinks, El Granaino Bar Mesón offers a fine selection of local wines, beers, and cocktails. The house wine, which is sourced from nearby vineyards, pairs beautifully with almost any dish on the menu. For something refreshing, try the classic Spanish "tinto de verano"-a mix of red wine and lemon soda that’s perfect for a warm afternoon.

While the food and drink are excellent, what truly makes this place stand out is the atmosphere. The owners and staff are incredibly friendly, and their passion for food and hospitality is evident in every interaction. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, you'll feel like part of the family.

  • El Granaino is quite unique. A tiny bar/restaurant off C. Real, it would be easy to miss but for the sign at the top of the steps. The owner is very friendly, and was teaching an Irish couple some bits of Spanish in between bringing food and drinks out. With my limited Spanish, I acted as a low quality translator for both, and we had a great time. A word of warning, if that's the correct word, the plates are bigger than tapas size. Most can be ordered as media size, which is smaller than a full portion, but still very substantial, so don't go mad. The food is traditionally Spanish and of excellent quality, and beer is served in chilled ceramic cups. Have the carne de la abuela (Grandma meat), you will never have a meat dish more tender. Value for money is also exceptional

  • This side street restaurant serves great food. We had the Pedro Peepers and Meat (pork) Skewers. Delicious.

  • Very down to earth and oroginal place. We tried the chistorras, which were delicious, and the aubergines with honey. Amazing. They bring you a little tapa (cheese, in oir case) with the drink, and some olives. So, food was great. I was just disappointed as I have asked a vermouth and got some Martini, instead.

  • Very attentive service and great food! We tried the pulpo, pimientos de padrón, langostinos à la plancha, berenjenas con miel de caña and queso de oveja. All were delicious, even the olives served with our drinks. We loved the cañas served in céramique mugs so much that we got some to take home as souvenirs! A lovely spot for tapas!

  • Perfect. When on holiday.. I always try to find a place serving “real” food. Not flashy, showy stuff… but honest food. Between us (3) We ordered: Patatas bravas.. (huge portion!) Padron peppers.. (salted perfectly…always amazes me how many places can get that wrong) Grandma’s meat (ridiculously tender) and chicken nuggets for the lad. On top of this.. the beer was kept cold in ceramic cups. Will definately be going back. 10/10

  • Fantastic tapa bar. The owners are so friendly and even translated the menu for us as they had only been open 6 days. I would recommend the tapas to anyone, delicious and a great variety. Very popular amongst locals. We visited quite a few times over the week and will definitely be returning!!
